This was the best CD Release I have attended. The intimate setting of the back room, Sue and Dwight’s great music backed up by some of Toronto’s top musicians and singers, throw in some snacks and a “gift” from Africa, and you end up with a very special evening.
The album, Little Child Big World, chronicles some of the experiences and emotions Sue and Dwight had while in Africa a couple of years ago. The impact of the songs was enhanced, as they recently returned from another trip to Africa.
Not all the songs are related to Africa. For example, Prairie Girl takes us back to their prairie roots and their first album while providing a lyrical bridge to their life in Toronto and Africa.
Their lyrics always tell a story and frequently pull at your emotions, asking us to celebrate all we have, to consider the perspective of those who are without, to not let our fears cause us to miss out on what’s important in life, and to consider what we can do to improve our world and the planet we live on.
I have several favourite songs on this album. The one that strikes me the hardest is “See The Little Baby”. The upbeat gospel tune gets you smiling and clapping. You want to get up and say halleluiah and sway to the rhythm and all things good. Then you listen to the lyrics. Suffice to say there isn’t much happiness to be found there. The contrast is stunning, and therefore, all the more thought provoking.
